PermaTune

About PermaTune

Advanced ignition technology with an "old school" appearance and high tech electronoics.

Perma-Tune specialises in high-performance Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) systems designed as direct replacements for original Porsche ignition units. Widely used on air-cooled Porsche models, Perma-Tune CDI units deliver stronger spark energy, improved reliability, and consistent ignition timing compared to ageing factory electronics.

Engineered to modern standards while maintaining plug-and-play compatibility, Perma-Tune ignition systems are trusted by classic Porsche owners seeking reliable starting, smoother running, and long-term durability.

What Perma-Tune Ignition Systems Do

Perma-Tune CDI units control the generation and delivery of high-energy spark to the spark plugs, helping to:

  • Improve cold and hot starting reliability
  • Maintain consistent ignition timing
  • Deliver a stronger, cleaner spark at high RPM
  • Reduce misfires and hesitation
  • Support efficient combustion in classic engines

By replacing older or failing ignition electronics, Perma-Tune systems help restore engine responsiveness, smooth idle, and dependable performance.

Why do CDI Units Fail

Ignition systems are exposed to harsh operating conditions, and failures commonly occur due to:

  • Heat-related electronic component degradation
  • Age-related failure of capacitors and internal circuitry
  • Vibration and moisture ingress
  • Electrical load stress over extended service life

As CDI units age, spark energy can weaken or become inconsistent, leading to hard starting, misfires, poor throttle response, or complete ignition failure.

When Perma-Tune Ignition Systems Should Be Replaced

Perma-Tune or original CDI ignition units should be replaced when:

  • Starting becomes difficult or unreliable
  • Misfires occur under load or at high RPM
  • Engine performance becomes inconsistent
  • Original ignition electronics are over 20–30 years old

Replacing a failing ignition unit proactively helps prevent breakdowns, poor drivability, and potential engine damage, particularly in classic and collector vehicles.
