The brake pad wear sensor harness serves as the electrical link between each brake pad wear sensor and the vehicle’s signal/monitoring circuitry (ABS/ECU). As the pads wear down to a threshold level, the sensor completes a circuit that triggers a warning light on the dash, alerting the driver that pad replacement is due.

What Does the Brake Pad Wear Sensor Do?
The brake pad wear sensor is an important safety component that monitors the thickness of the front brake pads. As the friction material wears down, the sensor eventually contacts the brake disc, completing an electrical circuit that activates the brake wear warning light on the dashboard.
Its primary functions include:
- Monitoring front brake pad wear.
- Activating the dashboard brake warning light.
- Preventing excessive brake pad wear.
- Helping protect the brake discs from damage.
- Supporting scheduled brake maintenance.
- Improving overall braking safety.
The sensor provides an early warning, allowing brake pads to be replaced before braking performance is compromised.
Why Do Brake Pad Wear Sensors Fail?
Brake wear sensors are consumable components and are
designed to be replaced during brake servicing. Common reasons for failure
include:
- Normal activation once the brake pads reach their wear limit.
- Heat generated by the braking system.
- Damage during brake pad removal.
- Road debris and moisture.
