Information
Camshaft timing chain.
Timing chain from the intermediate shaft to the heads.
Sold each, Two chains are typically required per engine, as each bank uses its own camshaft timing chain.
Fits:
Porsche 996 Carrera 3.6L 2002 - 2004
Porsche 987 Boxster / Boxster S 2005 - 2008
Porsche 987C Cayman / Cayman S 2005 - 2008
Porsche 997 Carrera 3.6L / S 3.8L 2005 - 2008 COUPE / CABRIO
Diagram ref no. 26
The timing chain transfers rotational movement through the engine’s timing system so the camshafts open and close the intake and exhaust valves at the correct moment in the combustion cycle. Accurate synchronization between the crankshaft and camshafts is essential for optimal engine performance, efficiency and reliability.
Replacing worn or stretched timing chains helps maintain correct valve timing and prevents potential engine damage caused by timing inaccuracies.
Function
• Engine Timing Synchronisation: Links the intermediate shaft and camshafts
• Valve Control: Ensures intake and exhaust valves operate at precise timing intervals
• Durability: Designed to withstand continuous high-speed engine operation
• Direct Replacement: OE Match construction ensures correct fit and performance
Timing chains operate continuously under high load and temperature inside the engine. Over time they may stretch or wear, which can lead to inaccurate valve timing, engine noise, or performance loss. Installing a new OE Match timing chain helps maintain precise engine timing, ensures smooth operation of the valve train and protects critical engine components from premature wear.
Consider replacing the timing chain when:
• Performing a major engine rebuild
• Servicing the timing system or chain tensioners
• Experiencing timing chain noise or rattle
• High-mileage engine maintenance

What This Product Does:
- The timing chain tensioner is a hydraulic (typically oil-fed) or spring-loaded device that takes up slack in the timing chain drive system. Without correct tension, the chain can “slap”, skip a tooth, or jump, which can cause serious engine timing errors.
- In an engine like the Porsche performance flat-six, accurate timing is critical. The tensioner ensures the chain remains properly seated against the guides/rails and avoids noise, mis-timing, or eventual failure.
- Because modern Porsche engines often use duplex chains, intermediate shafts and high rev operation, a precise tensioner is essential for durability, reliability and performance.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- You hear rattling, clattering or ticking noises from the timing‐cover area on startup or idle — a classic symptom of a loose timing chain.
- Your car triggers engine fault codes related to camshaft timing, crankshaft–cam correlation, or variable valve timing errors, indicating possible timing chain slack or timing drive issues.
- You are doing major engine work (e.g., timing cover removal, chain/guide replacement) — since the tensioner is integral to the timing chain system, it’s prudent to replace it at the same time for full reliability.
- The engine has high mileage or service history, and you want to pre-emptively safeguard the chain drive.
- On visual inspection (if accessible) you find slack in the timing chain, worn guides/rails, or old/deteriorated tensioner components.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Engine protection: A faulty tensioner can allow the timing chain to jump or skip, which risks piston-to-valve contact, major engine damage, and costly repairs.
- Maintains precise timing & performance: Correct chain tension ensures accurate valve timing, smooth idle, full power delivery and reliability.
- Eliminates noise & improves reliability: Replacing a worn tensioner removes chain-slap noise and helps prevent future failure.
- Cost efficient when engine access is open: Since accessing the tensioner and chain drive requires substantial labour, replacing the tensioner while you’re already there avoids further job later.
