crankshaft and drives the auxiliary belt system. Its integrated vibration
dampener also helps absorb torsional vibrations generated by the engine,

What Does the Crankshaft Pulley with Dampener Do?
As the engine runs, the crankshaft produces small twisting vibrations with each combustion cycle. The dampener helps absorb these vibrations before they are transferred through the crankshaft and auxiliary drive system.
The pulley also transfers crankshaft rotation to the auxiliary drive belt.
A correctly functioning crankshaft pulley helps:
- Drive the auxiliary belt system
- Reduce crankshaft torsional vibration
- Maintain smooth belt operation
- Reduce vibration transmitted to engine components
- Protect associated pulleys and belt-driven equipment
- Support smooth engine operation
Why Do Crankshaft Pulleys and Dampeners Fail?
The dampener is exposed to constant vibration, heat and engine speed changes. Over time, the rubber damping material between the pulley sections can deteriorate, crack or separate.
Common causes include:
- Age-related rubber deterioration
- Repeated heating and cooling cycles
- Engine vibration
- Contamination from engine oil or other fluids
- Cracking or separation of the damping material
- Pulley distortion or damage
- High mileage and general wear
Once the damping material deteriorates, the inner and outer sections of the pulley can begin moving independently.
When Should the Crankshaft Pulley Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered if:
- The pulley visibly wobbles while the engine is running
- Cracks appear in the rubber dampening section
- The rubber begins separating from the pulley
- Unusual vibration develops from the front of the engine
- The auxiliary belt runs unevenly
- Squeaking, knocking or rattling noises are present
- The pulley is physically damaged or distorted
- Inspection confirms deterioration of the dampener
A failing crankshaft pulley should not be ignored, as complete separation can affect the auxiliary drive system and potentially damage surrounding components.
Important Auxiliary Drive Checks
When replacing the crankshaft pulley, inspect the auxiliary drive belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and surrounding components for wear or damage.
Any oil or coolant leaks contaminating the pulley should also be repaired, as fluids can accelerate deterioration of the rubber damping material.
