What This Product Does:
The module is an acceleration / impact sensor that detects a collision, particularly with a pedestrian. When such an event is detected, the sensor triggers the pedestrian protection bonnet (also called active bonnet), which lifts the bonnet slightly to create a cushioning space between the bonnet and the rigid engine components (reducing severity of injuries).
It is mounted likely behind or within the front bumper/bonnet area so it can sense when an impact occurs on the bonnet or front face of the car.
Symptoms / Signs Of Failure:
- The pedestrian protection bonnet not deploying in the event of low-impact collisions (or tests) when it should.
- Warning lights or fault codes in the vehicle pertaining to pedestrian protection, bonnet lift, or related safety systems.
- The system may perform self-checks (on ignition) and indicate faults via the dashboard.
- Potentially no obvious outward signs until a collision, but damage or water ingress in that area might degrade performance.
- If the sensor is unplugged, incorrectly installed, or its connectors are corroded, it may disable the active bonnet system entirely.
- Safety: This system is designed to protect pedestrians. In a collision, reducing the impact severity can save lives and reduce injuries.
- Compliance: In many regions, pedestrian protection features are required by regulation. A non-functioning system could lead to failing inspections or being non-compliant.
