Developed through extensive research and real-world data logging this racing sump is engineered to significantly reduce or eliminate the extreme oil pressure drops caused when the oil pump draws air under high cornering loads.
For dedicated track engines, a Racing Sump is considered essential. For aggressively driven road cars, it is strongly recommended.
What a Racing Oil Sump Does
The oil sump, also known as the oil pan, stores and supplies engine oil to the oil pump. Under normal road driving conditions, the factory sump performs adequately. However, during hard cornering, heavy braking or sustained high lateral G forces, oil can move away from the pickup point.
When this happens, the oil pump can draw air instead of oil
(aeration), causing a sudden drop in oil pressure.
Even brief oil pressure loss
can lead to:
- Bearing wear
- Scored crank journals
- Engine overheating
- Catastrophic engine failure
The Racing Sump is designed to control oil movement inside the sump, keeping the oil pickup submerged during extreme driving conditions.
Why M96 and M97 Engines Suffer Oil Starvation
Oil starvation is the most common cause of engine failure seen in M96 and M97 engines. Through extensive testing and analysis, this issue is entirely preventable.
Under aggressive driving or track use, standard sump designs allow oil surge away from the pickup. Data logging has shown that these conditions can create extreme pressure drops indicative of the oil pump sucking air.
By combining:
- A Racing Sump
- High quality 50W or 60W oil (depending on engine temperature)
- Oil filled to the maximum safe level
