This precision-threaded nut is used within the internal gears and shafts arrangement of the Porsche G64 manual transmission, fitted to all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 models.
Also known as a gearbox intermediate shaft nut, transmission shaft retaining nut or internal gearbox hexagon nut, this component helps secure the specified rotating shaft assembly in accordance with Porsche's original transmission design.
The Porsche 964 Carrera 4 uses a sophisticated manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system that distributes engine torque through the gearbox and associated drivetrain components.
Inside the transmission, shafts, gears, bearings, spacers and synchroniser components must remain correctly positioned to ensure reliable operation.
The Hexagon Nut M42 × 1.25 forms part of this internal assembly, providing a threaded fastening connection on the corresponding gearbox shaft.
Its fine-pitch thread allows controlled engagement with the matching shaft thread.
Correct installation is essential because internal gearbox fasteners operate in an environment subject to changing torque loads, vibration, rotational forces and temperature variations.
Manufactured to Porsche's original equipment specifications, the Genuine Porsche nut provides the specified thread dimensions and fastening configuration for its documented application.
Although the nut is not a routine service item, it may become damaged during gearbox disassembly, previous repairs or incorrect installation.
Stripped threads, damaged hexagonal flats, corrosion or distortion can compromise its suitability for secure reassembly.
A damaged or incorrectly secured shaft nut may affect the retention of associated transmission components, potentially leading to unwanted internal movement or additional gearbox damage.
Replacing an unsuitable nut with the correct Genuine Porsche component helps restore the intended fastening arrangement and supports accurate gearbox assembly.
Ideal for Porsche 964 Carrera 4 transmission rebuilds, internal shaft repairs, bearing replacement and classic gearbox restoration, this Genuine Porsche Hexagon Nut provides a factory-specified replacement for the compatible G64 gearbox assembly.
What This Product Does:
The Hexagon Nut M42 × 1.25 is a mechanical fastening component used inside the manual gearbox.
Its principal function is to secure the designated transmission shaft assembly using the specified threaded connection.
A manual transmission contains several interconnected rotating components responsible for transferring engine torque and providing different gear ratios.
These components rely on accurately positioned gears, bearings, spacers and retaining hardware.
The nut forms part of the original securing arrangement and helps maintain the specified assembled condition of the associated shaft components.
Its main functions include:
- Securing the transmission shaft assembly: Provides the threaded fastening connection at the specified location.
- Maintaining component retention: Helps keep the associated shaft components in their intended assembled positions.
- Supporting gearbox assembly integrity: Provides a secure mechanical connection within the transmission.
- Maintaining correct thread engagement: Uses Porsche's specified M42 × 1.25 fine-pitch thread.
- Supporting correct internal positioning: Works with neighbouring gearbox components and retaining hardware.
- Withstanding transmission operating loads: Functions within an assembly exposed to vibration and changing drivetrain forces.
- Supporting gearbox refurbishment: Allows damaged original fastening hardware to be renewed.
- Preserving factory specifications: Maintains the original Porsche component design.
- Supporting transmission reliability: Helps prevent problems associated with a loose or damaged shaft fastener.
- Providing a serviceable fastening point: Enables correct gearbox reassembly when replacement is required.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The Hexagon Nut M42 × 1.25 is a stationary fastening component relative to the shaft on which it is installed.
It is not designed to wear in the same manner as synchroniser rings, bearings or gears.
Damage is more commonly caused by incorrect installation, unsuitable tools, excessive tightening, previous removal or problems elsewhere in the transmission.
Common signs of a damaged or unsuitable nut include:
- Damaged internal threads: Stripped or deformed threads may prevent secure engagement.
- Cross-threading: Incorrect installation may damage the nut and shaft threads.
- Rounded hexagonal flats: Unsuitable tools may damage the external driving surfaces.
- Cracked nut body: Excessive force or mechanical damage may cause cracking.
- Distorted shape: Incorrect handling or tightening may deform the component.
- Corrosion or surface damage: Deterioration may affect the nut's suitability for reuse.
- Difficulty tightening: Damaged threads may prevent normal installation.
- Difficulty removing: Previous overtightening or thread damage may make removal difficult.
- Insufficient fastening security: A damaged nut may be unable to maintain the required connection.
- Evidence of movement: Witness marks or displacement of associated components may indicate an incorrectly secured assembly.
- Damage discovered during gearbox overhaul: The nut may show signs of previous incorrect servicing.
- Damaged mating shaft threads: Deterioration may be present on both the nut and shaft.
- Incorrect replacement hardware: A nut with unsuitable dimensions or thread pitch may not fit correctly.
- Internal transmission noise: A loose shaft assembly may contribute to abnormal noises in severe cases.
- Abnormal gearbox operation: Significant internal component movement can affect transmission operation.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a damaged transmission shaft nut helps ensure the gearbox can be correctly assembled and securely fastened.
The internal components of a manual transmission operate under substantial mechanical loads.
A nut that cannot provide the intended thread engagement or fastening security may compromise the associated shaft assembly.
Reusing a damaged component can also risk further damage to the shaft threads or adjacent gearbox parts.
Installing a Genuine Porsche Hexagon Nut M42 × 1.25 helps to:
- Restore secure shaft fastening: Replace a damaged or unsuitable original nut.
- Maintain correct gearbox assembly: Preserve Porsche's specified internal fastening arrangement.
- Replace stripped threads: Renew a nut that can no longer engage correctly.
- Address damaged driving surfaces: Replace hardware with rounded or distorted hexagonal flats.
- Support reliable transmission operation: Maintain the integrity of the associated shaft connection.
- Reduce the risk of internal movement: Help retain the connected components as intended.
- Protect expensive gearbox components: Avoid using damaged fastening hardware during reassembly.
- Support bearing and shaft repairs: Provide replacement hardware during relevant gearbox servicing.
- Maintain original thread specification: Use the correct M42 × 1.25 component.
- Support professional gearbox rebuilding: Restore the transmission using Genuine Porsche hardware.
- Preserve original vehicle specifications: Maintain the correct fastening arrangement for the applicable G64 gearbox.
- Support long-term transmission reliability: Avoid unnecessary risks associated with unsuitable replacement hardware.
Replacement is recommended when the nut has damaged threads, cracks, distorted flats or other defects that prevent correct installation.
A new nut may also be required during gearbox disassembly where Porsche's workshop instructions specify replacement rather than reuse.
