What This Product Does
The ignition coil transforms the vehicle electrical system's low voltage into a high-voltage pulse. This allows the spark plug to ignite the compressed air and fuel mixture at the correct point in the combustion cycle.
Functions
- Generates the high voltage needed by the spark plug
- Supports consistent ignition within its assigned cylinder
- Helps maintain smooth starting, idling and acceleration
- Forms part of the engine's direct-ignition system
Technical Details
- Genuine Porsche ignition coil
- Porsche part number: 9A160210408
- Supplied individually
- Six ignition coils are required per six-cylinder engine
- Supersedes Porsche references 9A160210401, 9A160210402 and 9A160210403
Symptoms of Fault
- Intermittent or persistent engine misfiresRough idle or hesitation during acceleration
- Difficult starting, particularly when the engine is hot
- Reduced engine power or limp modeI
- lluminated engine warning light
- Misfire or ignition-coil circuit fault codes
- Poor fuel economy caused by incomplete combustion.
Why Replacement Matters
Heat, vibration and electrical stress can gradually weaken the internal insulation of an ignition coil. Replacing a confirmed faulty unit helps restore dependable spark delivery and reduces the risk of continued misfiring. Check the spark plug, connector, wiring and engine earths during diagnosis, as faults in these areas can produce similar symptoms or place additional strain on the coil.

FAQs
Can an ignition coil fail only when hot?Yes. Heat can expose deterioration within the insulation or electrical connections, causing an intermittent misfire after the engine warms up.
Should a coil be replaced using only a fault code?
A fault code identifies the affected circuit or cylinder but should be supported by checks of the spark plug, connector, wiring, supply voltage and earth connection.
Should the spark plugs also be inspected?
Yes. Worn, damaged or incorrectly specified spark plugs can increase the electrical load placed on an ignition coil.

• This product supersedes. Porsche's old part numbers: 9A160210401, 9A160210402, 9A160210403, 9A160210404, 9A160210405, 9A160210406
• Position on Vehicle: Mounted on top of the engine, on each ignition-coil tower (direct ignition design); one coil per cylinder.
• Applications: Suitable replacement when original ignition coil shows wear, misfires, or performance issues — restoring reliable spark delivery, smooth running and correct engine behaviour.
The ignition coil is fundamental to your engine’s ignition system: it supplies the high-voltage spark to each cylinder. When a coil fails or degrades, symptoms may include misfires, rough idling, loss of power, increased emissions or even engine warning lights. Replacing a degraded unit with a fresh coil restores reliable ignition, optimal engine performance and helps prevent downstream damage (e.g., catalytic converter issues).
When and why to replace:
• Engine misfires, rough idle, or “choppy” acceleration.
• Trouble codes referencing misfire or coil circuit faults.
• One or more cylinders showing mis-fire despite spark plugs being serviceable.
• During tune-up/maintenance when coils are accessible and nearing service interval.
• Preventive replacement on high-mileage or original equipment coils to avoid sudden failure.
