A common cause of odometer failure on classic Porsche VDO speedometers is a deteriorated or damaged internal drive gear. Over time, the original gear can become brittle with age, causing the teeth to crack, strip or break away. When this happens, the speedometer needle may continue to display vehicle speed correctly, while the odometer and trip meter stop recording mileage.
Replacing the failed gear restores the mechanical drive to the odometer, allowing both the main odometer and trip counter to function correctly once again.
