Information
Primary Timing Chain/Balance Shaft Drive.
The IWIS Primary Timing Chain / Balance Shaft Drive is a replacement internal engine drive-chain component for compatible Porsche applications. It forms part of the engine's timing and balance-shaft drive system, transmitting rotational movement between key internal components to maintain the required mechanical relationship during engine operation.
Fits:
Diagram Ref No 1
Timing and balance-shaft drive components operate continuously whenever the engine is running. Wear, elongation or damage to the chain can introduce excessive slack, noise and inaccurate drive operation. If deterioration becomes severe, there is a risk of the chain jumping or failing, potentially resulting in significant internal engine damage.

It forms part of the engine's timing and balance-shaft drive system, transmitting rotational movement between key internal components to maintain the required mechanical relationship during engine operation.
Fits:
- Porsche 957 Cayenne 3.0L Diesel 2007-10
- Porsche 958 Cayenne V6 3.0L Diesel (245Hp) 2011
Diagram Ref No 1
Timing and balance-shaft drive components operate continuously whenever the engine is running. Wear, elongation or damage to the chain can introduce excessive slack, noise and inaccurate drive operation. If deterioration becomes severe, there is a risk of the chain jumping or failing, potentially resulting in significant internal engine damage.
What This Product Does:
The primary drive chain transfers rotational movement through the engine's internal drive system.
Depending on the specific engine configuration, it forms part of the mechanical drive arrangement responsible for maintaining the required relationship between the crankshaft, timing system and balance-shaft assembly.
Its functions help support:
- Accurate mechanical drive within the timing system
- Correct synchronisation of associated engine components
- Reliable balance-shaft operation
- Smooth engine operation
- Controlled transfer of rotational movement
- Consistent timing-system performance
- Reduced unwanted engine vibration through correct balance-shaft operation
The chain must remain correctly tensioned and properly engaged with its associated sprockets throughout engine operation.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Timing and balance-shaft chains are designed for extended service life, but wear can develop through mileage, inadequate lubrication, contamination or deterioration of associated tensioners, guides and sprockets.
Possible symptoms include:
- Rattling from the timing-chain area
- Metallic clattering or chain noise
- Excessive chain slack
- Chain elongation
- Abnormal noise during cold start
- Noise that changes with engine speed
- Increased engine vibration
- Rough or less refined engine operation
- Timing-related fault codes
- Crankshaft/camshaft correlation faults where relevant
- Balance-shaft related faults where monitored
- Visible wear on the chain during inspection
- Worn or damaged chain guides
- Abnormal sprocket wear
- Metal or plastic debris in the engine oil or filter
These symptoms can also be caused by other timing-system or internal engine components, so accurate diagnosis is important.
Why Replacement Matters:
The primary timing and balance-shaft drive chain is an important internal engine component.
Replacing a confirmed worn, elongated or damaged IWIS Primary Timing Chain / Balance Shaft Drive can help:
- Restore reliable chain-drive operation
- Maintain correct mechanical synchronisation
- Reduce excessive chain slack
- Reduce abnormal timing-chain noise
- Restore reliable balance-shaft drive
- Help maintain smooth engine operation
- Protect associated guides and sprockets
- Reduce the risk of the chain jumping
- Reduce the risk of major timing-system failure
- Protect expensive internal engine components
A worn chain should not be ignored once it has exceeded the permitted service specification.

What This Product Does:
- The “tensioner blade” refers to a guide or support element in the timing chain system that helps apply correct pressure or alignment on the chain, often in combination with a chain tensioner or guide rail.
- When the timing chain runs between the crankshaft and camshafts (or intermediate shafts) it needs not only the chain and tensioner, but also supporting blades/rails/arms to manage movement, reduce slack and keep the chain tracking correctly.
- The tensioner blade part is one of the curated OEM components that helps ensure accurate timing drive by maintaining chain-contact, reducing vibration, guiding the chain — thereby supporting long-term durability and correct engine timing.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- The timing chain system is being serviced (e.g., chain/guide/tensioner replacement) — as the blade is likely exposed or used in that service path.
- There are timing-related issues: rattling or clattering from the timing cover area, especially on cold start or idle — which can indicate slack or improper chain tracking.
- Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to camshaft/chain timing errors — because a damaged or worn blade may allow chain deflection or mistracking.
- Visual inspection (if accessible) reveals the blade or guide is worn, cracked, missing, or otherwise compromised.
- High mileage or extended service intervals — the supporting components around the chain wear, and a worn blade can expedite chain wear or guide rail wear.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Maintains engine timing integrity: If the blade that guides or supports the chain is compromised, the chain may skip, jump or wear prematurely — leading to timing errors and potential engine damage.
- Reduces noise & prolongs component life: Components like the tensioner blade help damp chain vibration and keep tensioners/rails from excessive wear. Replacing it helps preserve the chain drive system.
- Cost-effective preventive repair: When you already have access to the timing system (front cover off, chain out) replacing components such as the blade prevents future labour for incremental failures.

What This Product Does:
- In a timing‐chain drive system (crankshaft → intermediate shaft → camshafts), there are guides/rails that the chain runs on. These guides keep the chain aligned, reduce vibration or deflection, and support tensioners in maintaining correct chain tension.
- The slide rail is one of these guiding components — it provides a smooth surface and correct route for the chain, and helps ensure the chain remains properly engaged with sprockets and tensioners.
- If the slide rail is worn, cracked or damaged, the chain may run with slack, contact adjacent components, produce noise, or even skip/skip-tooth under stress — which affects timing and can lead to engine damage.
When You Should Consider Replacement:
- You are already servicing the timing chain system (timing cover off, chain/guide/tensioner replacement) — since access is already required, replacing the guide rail is cost‐effective and prevents future access.
- You hear rattling or a clattering noise from the front of the engine (timing cover area) on cold start or idle, which can indicate chain deflection or guide wear.
- You have diagnostic codes relating to camshaft or intermediate shaft timing variations — a damaged or worn guide can cause chain timing to vary.
- Visual inspection (if cover removed) shows the guide rail is cracked, has excessive wear, gouges, or the chain has worn a groove in the rail.
- The vehicle has high mileage and the engine is performance-oriented — these guides can be wearing items and proactively replacing them improves long-term reliability.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Maintain timing accuracy & reliability: If the chain runs on a compromised guide, chain slack or mis-tracking can occur — which leads to timing drift, loss of power, or in worst cases, engine damage.
- Eliminate noise and improve smoothness: Worn guides allow chain slap, noise during engine operation, or rougher operation — replacing the slide rail restores proper chain path and quietness.
- Prevent escalated failure: A damaged guide could allow the chain to skip or jump, which on high-performance Porsche engines can mean valve-to-piston interaction and major damage.
- Efficient service: Since replacing a guide rail often requires similar labour as chain/tensioner replacement, doing it while the engine is opened saves future labour and increases reliability.
