Oil Pump Scavenge Pump In Cylinder Head.
The Porsche Oil Pump Scavenge Pump in Cylinder Head – OE Match (Part Number: 99710702105/2) is a replacement engine lubrication component designed for selected Porsche 911 (996 and 997.1), Boxster (987) and Cayman (987C) models.
Fits:
Diagram Ref No 17
Designed to match the fitment and intended functionality of the original Porsche component, this OE Match replacement provides a cost-effective alternative to a Genuine Porsche-branded scavenge pump while helping maintain efficient engine oil circulation and lubrication system reliability.
Located within the cylinder head assembly, the scavenge pump plays an important role in removing accumulated engine oil from the cylinder head and returning it to the engine's oil collection system.
Porsche's horizontally opposed flat-six engines rely on effective oil scavenging to prevent excessive oil accumulation around the camshafts and valve train. The scavenge pump helps maintain controlled oil circulation and ensures that engine oil can continue through the lubrication system.
Over time, the original scavenge pump can deteriorate due to internal mechanical wear, contamination, inadequate lubrication or damage to its internal pumping components. A faulty pump may reduce oil scavenging efficiency, allowing excessive oil accumulation within the cylinder head and potentially affecting engine lubrication.
Replacing a worn or defective scavenge pump with an OE Match replacement helps restore correct oil evacuation, maintain reliable engine operation and reduce the risk of lubrication-related problems.
Ideal for engine repairs, cylinder head servicing, lubrication system maintenance and Porsche engine rebuilding projects, this OE Match component provides a practical replacement solution for compatible Porsche flat-six engines.
What This Product Does:
The cylinder head scavenge pump is an essential component of the engine's lubrication management system.
Its primary function is to remove engine oil that collects within the cylinder head during normal operation and return it to the engine's oil collection circuit.
As the engine operates, pressurised oil is supplied to internal components, including the camshafts, camshaft bearings and valve train. After lubricating these components, the oil must be effectively removed from the cylinder head to prevent excessive accumulation.
The scavenge pump actively draws oil away from the cylinder head and transfers it back through the lubrication system.
Its main functions include:
- Removing excess oil: Extracts accumulated engine oil from the cylinder head to prevent excessive oil pooling.
- Supporting engine oil circulation: Returns scavenged oil to the engine's oil collection system for continued circulation.
- Maintaining lubrication efficiency: Helps ensure oil can move effectively through the engine's lubrication circuit.
- Reducing oil accumulation: Prevents excessive oil retention around the camshafts and valve train components.
- Supporting engine reliability: Helps maintain the oil management conditions required for dependable engine operation.
- Protecting internal components: Reduces the risk of lubrication-related problems associated with inadequate oil scavenging.
- Supporting oil temperature management: Contributes to continuous oil circulation, allowing oil to transfer heat through the engine's lubrication system.
- Maintaining original engine functionality: Preserves the intended oil scavenging arrangement of the Porsche flat-six engine.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The cylinder head scavenge pump operates continuously while the engine is running and is subjected to repeated mechanical loading, elevated temperatures and prolonged exposure to engine oil.
Over time, its internal pumping components may suffer from wear, contamination or mechanical damage.
Common symptoms of a worn or failing scavenge pump may include:
- Abnormal mechanical engine noise: Internal pump wear or damage may produce unusual noises from the cylinder head area.
- Excessive oil accumulation in the cylinder head: Reduced scavenging efficiency may allow oil to collect where it would normally be removed.
- Increased oil consumption: Oil management problems associated with inadequate scavenging may contribute to increased oil consumption in certain failure conditions.
- Blue exhaust smoke: Severe oil scavenging problems may contribute to oil entering the combustion process, although this symptom has several other possible causes.
- Irregular lubrication system behaviour: A defective pump may interfere with the engine's intended oil circulation and oil management.
- Internal pump wear or scoring: Inspection during engine dismantling may reveal damaged pumping surfaces, worn components or abnormal mechanical clearances.
- Metallic debris in engine oil: Severe pump damage may generate particles that circulate within the lubrication system.
- Oil leakage around the pump mounting area: Damaged sealing surfaces or deteriorated associated seals may allow oil to escape from the pump assembly.
- Engine performance concerns: Severe lubrication problems can affect engine reliability and may eventually lead to abnormal engine operation.
- Potential internal engine damage: Continued operation with a mechanically damaged scavenge pump may increase the risk of secondary lubrication-related damage.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a worn or damaged cylinder head scavenge pump is important for maintaining correct oil circulation and reliable operation of the Porsche flat-six engine.
A defective pump may struggle to remove accumulated oil from the cylinder head, interfering with the engine's intended oil management system.
Continued operation with a damaged scavenge pump may contribute to excessive oil accumulation, abnormal oil circulation and increased mechanical stress on associated lubrication components.
Installing a replacement OE Match Cylinder Head Scavenge Pump helps to:
- Restore effective oil scavenging: Remove accumulated oil from the cylinder head as intended.
- Maintain reliable oil circulation: Support the return of scavenged oil through the engine's lubrication system.
- Prevent excessive oil accumulation: Reduce the risk of oil pooling around the camshafts and valve train.
- Support engine lubrication: Help maintain the correct operating conditions for internal engine components.
- Protect engine reliability: Replace damaged or deteriorated pumping components before further problems develop.
- Reduce lubrication-related risks: Help prevent secondary problems associated with inadequate oil scavenging.
- Restore original engine functionality: Maintain the cylinder head oil management arrangement intended for the engine.
- Support professional engine rebuilding: Provide a replacement component during cylinder head servicing or internal engine repairs.
- Improve long-term durability: Replace worn mechanical components to help maintain dependable engine operation.
- Provide a cost-effective repair: Offer an OE Match alternative to the Genuine Porsche component.
Replacing the scavenge pump is particularly recommended when inspection confirms internal pump wear, mechanical damage or inadequate oil scavenging performance.
For engines undergoing major repairs or cylinder head refurbishment, inspecting the scavenge pump and associated lubrication passages is advisable to identify wear, contamination or restrictions.
