The large rear glass hatch fitted to Porsche transaxle models and later Porsche 928 vehicles provides excellent access to the luggage compartment, but its weight places significant demands on the support struts. Over time, the internal gas pressure within the strut gradually weakens, reducing its ability to hold the tailgate safely open.
Replacing worn tailgate dampers restores smooth opening and closing action while helping prevent the hatch from unexpectedly dropping during loading, maintenance or everyday use.
What Does a Rear Tailgate Glass Strut Do?
The tailgate strut uses compressed gas within a sealed cylinder to assist with lifting the rear hatch and to support its weight when fully open.
A properly functioning rear hatch strut helps provide:
Smooth tailgate opening and closing Secure support of the rear glass hatch Easier access to the luggage compartment Improved safety during loading and maintenance Reduced strain on hinges and mounting points Convenient day-to-day vehicle useWithout adequate support from the gas struts, the heavy rear hatch can become difficult to lift and may fail to remain open safely.
When Should a Tailgate Strut Be Replaced?
Tailgate gas struts are wear-and-tear components that gradually lose pressure as they age. Exposure to temperature changes, repeated operation and long-term use can accelerate deterioration.
Common symptoms of failing tailgate struts include:
Rear hatch slowly drops when open Tailgate fails to stay fully raised Increased effort required to lift the hatch Weak lifting assistance Oil leakage from the strut body Uneven hatch operation Sudden hatch closureReplacing weak or worn tailgate dampers helps restore safe operation and prevents accidental hatch closure that could cause injury or damage to the vehicle.
Features & Benefits
Rear tailgate glass strut / damper Suitable for all Porsche 924 models Suitable for all Porsche 944 models Suitable for Porsche 928 models (1992-1995) Supports the rear glass hatch safely when open Smooth and controlled hatch operation Restores lifting assistance Helps prevent accidental tailgate closure Durable construction for long service life Ideal for maintenance, repair and restoration projectsKeep your Porsche hatchback operating safely and smoothly with a quality Rear Tailgate Glass Strut / Damper from Design911.

Design911 supplies a comprehensive range of Porsche tailgate struts, rear hatch dampers, gas springs, lift supports and body hardware components for Porsche transaxle and GT models. Whether you're maintaining a Porsche 924, restoring a Porsche 944 or servicing a late-model Porsche 928, our hatch support components help ensure safe and reliable operation.
Rear hatch struts are essential for supporting the large glass tailgate fitted to these models. As gas pressure weakens over time, the hatch can become difficult to use safely and conveniently.
Replacing worn hatch dampers is a simple but highly effective maintenance upgrade that improves usability, safety and owner confidence.
Why Replace Porsche Tailgate Struts?
Benefits of replacing worn rear hatch dampers include:
Improved safety when accessing the luggage area Reliable tailgate support Smooth opening and closing operation Reduced strain on hinges and body fittings Prevention of accidental hatch closure Enhanced convenience and practicality Improved restoration quality and vehicle presentationRelated reference numbers
