What Do the Wheel Arch Mouldings Do?
Wheel arch mouldings provide both decorative and protective benefits.
Their primary functions include:
- Finishing the edge of each wheel arch with a factory-style chrome trim.
- Enhancing the classic appearance of the Porsche 911 bodywork.
- Helping protect painted wheel arch edges from minor stone chips and scuffing.
- Concealing small imperfections along the arch lip.
- Restoring the original period-correct styling of early Porsche 911 models.
The bright chrome trim is one of the defining exterior details found on many classic Porsche restorations.
Why Do Wheel Arch Mouldings Need Replacing?
Original mouldings are exposed to road debris, weather and regular cleaning throughout their service life.
Common causes of deterioration include:
- Chrome pitting and corrosion.
- Scratches and impact damage.
- Dents caused by stones or minor knocks.
- Distortion from incorrect removal.
- Loose or damaged fixing clips.
- Loss of shine through age and environmental exposure.
Damaged or dull mouldings can significantly reduce the visual appeal of an otherwise well-restored Porsche.
When Should They Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when:
- Chrome plating has become pitted or corroded.
- The mouldings are bent, dented or distorted.
- Original trim is missing.
- Repainting or restoring the bodywork.
- Replacing damaged fixing clips or trim.
- Completing a concours or factory-correct restoration.
Replacing all four mouldings together ensures a consistent finish and restores the classic lines of the Porsche 911.
