Hydraulic Tappet / Valve Lifter
Sold each
The hydraulic tappet / valve lifter is a precision
valvetrain component used in Porsche Macan 2.0ltr, Cayenne S Hybrid and
Panamera S Hybrid engines to automatically maintain correct valve clearance. By
using engine oil pressure, the tappet ensures smooth valve actuation, quiet
engine operation and consistent performance under all driving conditions.

In advanced Porsche petrol and hybrid powertrains, accurate valve control is essential for efficiency, refinement and long-term engine durability—making hydraulic tappets a critical service component.
What Does a Hydraulic Tappet / Valve Lifter Do?
Hydraulic tappets sit between the camshaft and the valves,
using pressurised engine oil to compensate for thermal expansion and component
wear. This allows the valvetrain to operate with:
- Correct valve timing and lift
- Reduced mechanical noise
- Smooth idle and throttle response
- Improved combustion efficiency
By eliminating the need for manual valve clearance adjustment, hydraulic tappets help maintain optimal engine performance throughout the engine’s service life.
Why Do Hydraulic Tappets Fail?
Hydraulic tappets operate in high-temperature, high-load
environments and rely heavily on clean, correctly pressurised oil. Common
causes of failure include:
- Oil contamination or sludge build-up
- Extended oil change intervals
- Internal wear of the tappet mechanism
- Loss of oil pressure retention
- Incorrect oil specification
Typical symptoms of failing tappets include:
- Ticking or tapping noises from the cylinder head
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Reduced engine efficiency
- Accelerated wear to camshafts and valves
Why Replace Worn Valve Lifters?
Replacing worn hydraulic tappets helps restore:
- Quiet, refined engine operation
- Accurate valve timing Improved drivability and efficiency
- Protection against further valvetrain damage
Ignoring tappet wear can result in costly repairs to camshafts, valves and cylinder heads—especially in hybrid engines where smooth operation is critical.

What This Product Does
The tappet transfers motion from the camshaft to the valve mechanism. Its hydraulic operation depends on the engine's lubrication system, making oil condition and the associated contact surfaces relevant when investigating wear or noise.
Functions
- Transfers camshaft movement to the valve mechanism.
- Supports valve opening in the specified engine application.
Symptoms of Fault
- Persistent ticking or tapping from the valve mechanism.
- Valve-mechanism noise becoming more pronounced as engine speed rises.
- Uneven contact wear found during inspection.
- Rough running or misfires where valve movement is affected.
Why Replacement Matters
A worn tappet can affect valve movement and contribute to abnormal contact with neighbouring components. Establish the cause before replacement, checking lubrication and camshaft condition rather than assuming every ticking noise originates from a tappet.
FAQs
Can oil condition affect hydraulic tappets?
Contaminated oil can cause hydraulic elements to stick. Include lubrication checks in the diagnosis.
Should the camshaft also be checked?
Inspect the cam lobes and tappet contact surfaces together, as wear may affect both components.

LIQUI MOLY Hydraulic Lifter Additive – 300ml
LIQUI MOLY Hydraulic Lifter Additive is an engine oil treatment designed to reduce noisy hydraulic tappets and improve the operation of oil-fed valve train components.
Its cleaning formula helps remove deposits from oil passages and valve bores, supporting smoother engine operation and improving the function of oil-pressure-operated timing chain tensioners.
What Does It Do?
The additive cleans oil passages and valve bores, helping hydraulic lifters operate correctly. It may also reduce noise from oil-pressure-operated timing chain tensioners.
Why Do Hydraulic Lifters Become Noisy?
Common causes include:
- Deposits restricting oil passages
- Contaminated or ageing engine oil
- Poor lubrication during cold starts
- Low engine oil pressure
- Internal lifter wear
When Should It Be Used?
Use when hydraulic tappet noise may be caused by deposits or restricted oil flow.
It can be added during routine servicing. Persistent mechanical noise requires diagnosis, as additives cannot repair worn or damaged components.
Application & Dosage
- Add directly to the engine oil.
- One 300ml container treats up to 6 litres of oil.
- Adjust the dosage proportionally for larger oil capacities.
- Can be added at any time.
- Warm the engine after adding.
- LIQUI MOLY recommends use after each oil change for a lasting effect.
Key Features
- Helps reduce hydraulic tappet noise
- Cleans oil passages and valve bores
- Improves engine oil lubrication properties
- Supports oil-pressure-operated timing chain tensioners
- Suitable for compatible petrol and diesel engines
- Tested for turbochargers and catalytic converters
- Suitable for engines with diesel particulate filters
- Compatible with commercially available engine oils
- 300ml container
