What This Product Does:
- The drop link connects the rear anti-roll bar (stabiliser bar) to the suspension arm or axle link, forming a link through which the stabiliser bar can apply force between the two sides of the rear suspension when the car is cornering.
- By transferring roll-bar forces, it helps reduce body roll, maintain tyre contact patch, improve rear stability and maintain chassis balance.
- A firm, well-designed drop link ensures that the anti-roll bar is fully engaged under load without unwanted compliance, thereby improving handling response, cornering grip, and driver feedback.
- Upgrading to an 85-Shore rated version means both less compliance (so fewer unwanted movements) and improved durability — especially important when using upgraded tyres, stiffer springs or track driving.
Symptoms & Signs Of Wear / When To Replace:
- Knocking or clunking noises from the rear suspension when going over bumps or during aggressive cornering — indicating the link or its joint/bush has excessive play.
- Rear body roll or instability: If the rear end of the car feels loose, shifts or leans more than expected under cornering, the drop link may be letting the rear stabiliser under-perform.
- Uneven tyre wear on the rear pair, particularly on the outside shoulder — because the stabiliser link may not be transmitting forces properly, geometry may be shifting.
- Visual wear: the joint/bushing may show cracking, movement, damaged boots, or the link may have corrosion or broken mount bushes.
- Upgraded suspension: If you have lowered the car, installed larger tyres or firmer springs, the stock drop links may be too soft or worn out — the sports-rated link helps restore performance.
- Ensures the rear anti-roll bar is actively working: If the drop links are soft or worn, the stabiliser bar’s effect is reduced, and the car’s handling suffers (increased roll, slower response). Upgrading removes this weak link.
- Improves handling precision: With firmer link materials and better joints, the rear end feels more controlled, the car responds faster and cornering stability is improved.
- Matches with other upgrades: If you’ve upgraded other suspension parts (e.g., springs, dampers, tyres) the original links may become the limiting factor — a sports-rated link ensures the rest of the system functions at its potential.
- Longevity & maintenance: The sports version (85 Shore) is likely to resist wear better than standard bushings—so less frequent replacements, better durability.
- Value & performance: For a Porsche 964, having proper performance-related suspension parts enhances both usability and resale value.
