It is a factory-engineered suspension component that connects the top of the shock absorber/strut assembly to the vehicle body, providing support, alignment, and vibration isolation.

It serves as the interface between the shock absorber and the chassis, sealing the suspension assembly and properly locating the strut within the wheel arch.
