Inspired by the Porsche 914's Motorsport Heritage
The Watkins Glen is created with the racing and sporting history of the Porsche 914 in mind.
Its name comes from Watkins Glen, one of North America's most famous motor racing circuits and a venue where the Porsche 914 achieved notable competition success during its racing career.
The seat reflects the styling of lightweight sports and racing seats from the 1970s, making it particularly suitable for Porsche 914 restorations, restomods and period-inspired performance builds.
Lightweight Fibreglass Seat Shell
Unlike conventional tubular-frame seats, the Watkins Glen uses a lightweight fibreglass shell.
The rigid shell provides a strong and supportive foundation while allowing the seat to maintain a slim, compact profile suitable for smaller classic sports cars.
The shell is designed to provide rigidity comparable to the original seat while offering significantly increased lateral support.
Key construction features include:
- Lightweight fibreglass seat shell
- Integrated headrest
- 1970s-inspired design
- Increased lateral support
- Fire-resistant foam
- Duralastic seat cushion suspension
- Compact, supportive seating position
- Designed around the Porsche 914 interior
Improved Side Support
One of the main advantages of the Watkins Glen is the additional side support compared with the original Porsche 914 seat.
The deeper, more supportive shell helps hold the driver securely during cornering, reducing unwanted movement across the seat during spirited driving.
The Watkins Glen is designed to provide a snug fit, making it particularly suited to drivers looking for a more closely fitting sports seat rather than the flatter profile of the standard factory seat.
Integrated Headrest
The Watkins Glen incorporates the headrest directly into the fibreglass seat shell.
This creates the distinctive one-piece profile associated with many sports and competition seats of the 1970s while maintaining a clean, period-inspired appearance.
The integrated design also eliminates the need for separate headrest frames or mounting hardware.
Designed for Standard 3-Point Seatbelts
This version of the Watkins Glen is intended for cars retaining their standard 3-point seatbelt arrangement.
The seat shell incorporates waist belt openings, but the 5-point harness rosettes supplied with the dedicated harness version are not included.
This makes the seat particularly suitable for road-focused Porsche 914 restorations and restomods where improved driver support is required while retaining the standard seatbelt system.
Porsche 914 OEM Slider Compatibility
The Watkins Glen has been designed to bolt onto the OEM Porsche 914 slider bracket.
Retaining the original slider arrangement allows the seat position to remain adjustable while providing a straightforward route to upgrading the factory seat.
This makes it particularly attractive for Porsche 914 owners looking for a period-inspired seat without completely redesigning the factory mounting arrangement.
Fire-Resistant Foam & Duralastic Suspension
Fire-resistant foam is combined with Duralastic belts for the seat cushion suspension.
The Duralastic system supports the occupant while allowing controlled movement within the cushion, helping provide a firm but comfortable driving position.
This allows the Watkins Glen to combine the supportive characteristics of a sports seat with the comfort required for road use and longer journeys.
Have Your Seats Upholstered Locally
Purchasing the Watkins Glen as a seat shell kit gives you the freedom to choose your own upholstery specification.
The shell kit can be supplied to your preferred local upholsterer or interior restoration specialist, allowing the finished seats to be matched precisely to the vehicle.
This is particularly useful during a full restoration where the seats, door cards and other interior components can all be upholstered by the same specialist.
Suitable for Other Classic Cars
Although originally developed around the Porsche 914, the compact proportions and 1970s styling of the Watkins Glen make it suitable for a variety of other classic sports cars.
Its lightweight shell can work particularly well in mid-engined sports cars and smaller British classics from the same era.
Installation outside the Porsche 914 application may require custom mounting brackets or other modifications and should be checked before installation.
Why Choose the Watkins Glen Seat Shell?
The Watkins Glen is ideal for drivers looking for greater lateral support than the original Porsche 914 seat while retaining a design that looks appropriate in a 1970s classic sports car.
The combination of a lightweight fibreglass shell,
integrated headrest, Duralastic cushion suspension and compatibility with the
Porsche 914 OEM slider makes it particularly suited to road, restoration and
restomod applications.
Watkins Glen Porsche 914 Seat Shell Kits
The Retro Trim Watkins Glen Seat Shell Kit provides a lightweight and supportive seating upgrade for Porsche 914 owners who want to retain standard 3-point seatbelts while improving the driving position and interior appearance.
Developed around the sporting heritage of the Porsche 914, its 1970s-inspired design combines a rigid fibreglass shell, integrated headrest and increased lateral support with Duralastic cushion suspension for improved comfort.
Compatibility with the original Porsche 914 slider bracket makes the Watkins Glen particularly attractive for restorations and restomods where owners want improved seating without losing the functionality of the factory adjustment system.
Its compact dimensions and classic styling also make the Watkins Glen a potential choice for other mid-engined sports cars and British classics of the period, subject to suitable mounting arrangements.
