Designed Around the Porsche 914
The Watkins Glen is an original design developed specifically with the Porsche 914 in mind.
Its compact dimensions and supportive shape complement the 914's low, mid-engined layout, while the seat is designed to bolt onto the OEM Porsche 914 slider bracket.
This allows the original seat adjustment system to be retained while upgrading to a lighter and more supportive sports seat.
Classic 1970s Motorsport Styling
The Watkins Glen takes its name from the famous Watkins Glen racing circuit, a venue closely associated with international sports car racing and Porsche competition history.
Its simple one-piece profile captures the appearance of sports and racing seats from the 1970s, making it particularly well suited to Porsche 914 vintage race builds, motorsport-inspired restorations and performance-focused restomods.
Lightweight Fibreglass Shell
The Watkins Glen uses a lightweight fibreglass shell rather than a conventional tubular seat frame.
This provides a rigid and supportive foundation while maintaining the compact dimensions required for smaller classic sports cars.
The shell is designed to offer rigidity comparable with the original Porsche 914 seat while providing considerably greater lateral support.
Integrated Headrest
The headrest forms part of the fibreglass shell, creating the distinctive one-piece appearance associated with many competition seats of the period.
The integrated design maintains a clean, purposeful profile while eliminating the need for a separate adjustable headrest assembly.
Designed for a 5-Point Harness
This version of the Watkins Glen has been developed specifically for vehicles using a 5-point seatbelt harness.
The seat shell incorporates openings for the waist/lap belts and is supplied with rosettes to provide a clean, finished appearance around the harness openings.
This makes the seat particularly suitable for vintage race cars and motorsport-inspired builds where a multi-point harness is required.
The harness itself must always be installed using appropriate vehicle mounting points and according to the harness manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of the vehicle's intended use.
Improved Side Support
One of the main advantages of the Watkins Glen compared with the original Porsche 914 seat is its increased lateral support.
The deeper sides help hold the driver securely during cornering, reducing movement across the seat during enthusiastic road or track driving.
The Watkins Glen provides a snug fit and is particularly suited to drivers who prefer a more closely fitting and supportive seating position.
Duralastic Seat Cushion Suspension
Duralastic belts are incorporated into the seat cushion area to provide a supportive but comfortable seating platform.
The Duralastic suspension allows a controlled amount of movement beneath the cushion, helping balance the rigidity of the fibreglass shell with the comfort required from the finished seat.
Combined with fire-resistant foam, this provides a firm and supportive driving position without relying on excessive amounts of heavy padding.
Porsche 914 OEM Slider Compatibility
The Watkins Glen has been designed to bolt onto the OEM Porsche 914 slider bracket.
Retaining the original slider system allows the driving position to remain adjustable while providing a straightforward way of replacing the factory seat with a more supportive alternative.
This makes the Watkins Glen particularly attractive for Porsche 914 owners who want a classic motorsport-style seat while retaining the functionality of the original mounting arrangement.
Have Your Seats Upholstered Locally
Purchasing the Watkins Glen as a seat shell kit allows you to choose your own upholstery specification and have the work completed by your preferred local trimmer or restoration specialist.
This provides considerably more freedom when creating a period-style or bespoke interior.
Having the upholstery completed locally also makes it easier to match the seats with door cards, carpets and other interior components during a complete restoration.
Suitable for Other Classic Cars
Although developed around the Porsche 914, the compact proportions and 1970s styling of the Watkins Glen make it suitable for a variety of other classic sports cars.
It can be particularly well suited to other mid-engined vehicles and smaller British sports cars of the period.
Installation outside the Porsche 914 application may require custom mounting brackets or other modifications and should be checked before installation.
Why Choose the Watkins Glen Seat ?
The Watkins Glen is designed for classic car owners looking for a lightweight seat with considerably more lateral support than a standard factory seat while retaining a period-appropriate appearance.
For a Porsche 914 fitted with a 5-point harness, it combines a rigid fibreglass shell, integrated headrest, dedicated harness openings and Duralastic cushion suspension in a compact design that works particularly well with the 914 interior.
Key advantages include:
- Lightweight fibreglass construction
- Classic 1970s motorsport appearance
- Designed around the Porsche 914
- Dedicated 5-point harness version
- Waist/lap belt openings incorporated into the shell
- Harness rosettes included
- Integrated headrest
- Increased side support
- Snug, supportive fit
- Fire-resistant foam
- Duralastic seat cushion suspension
- Compatible with the Porsche 914 OEM slider bracket
- Ready for bespoke upholstery
- Ideal for vintage race and motorsport-inspired builds
Watkins Glen Porsche 914 5-Point Harness Seat Shell Kits
The Retro Trim Watkins Glen Seat Shell Kit provides a lightweight and supportive seating solution for Porsche 914 owners building a vintage race, motorsport-inspired or performance-focused classic car with a 5-point harness.
Developed around the Porsche 914, the seat combines a lightweight fibreglass shell with an integrated headrest, increased lateral support and dedicated waist/lap belt openings. Supplied rosettes provide a finished appearance around the 5-point harness openings.
Compatibility with the OEM Porsche 914 slider bracket allows the original seat adjustment arrangement to be retained, while Duralastic cushion suspension and fire-resistant foam help balance support with comfort.
Its classic 1970s appearance also makes the Watkins Glen suitable for selected mid-engined sports cars and British classics where a compact, period-inspired harness seat is required.
