Diagram Ref No 1
The Porsche 997 Targa features a distinctive glass roof design with a separate opening rear glass section. The surrounding trim and retaining components are important for maintaining the correct fit and finish of the rear window assembly.
Over time, original clamping strips can become damaged, distorted, corroded or loose, particularly during rear window repairs, trim removal or Targa roof maintenance.
Replacing a worn or damaged rear window trim clamping strip helps restore the correct retention of the associated trim and maintain the original appearance of the rear glass assembly.
What Does the Rear Window Trim Clamping Strip Do?
The rear window trim clamping strip helps secure the associated trim in its intended position around the rear glass assembly.
Correctly retained trim is important for maintaining the fit, appearance and integrity of the surrounding window installation.
Its main functions include:
- Securing the corresponding rear window trim
- Helping maintain correct trim alignment
- Preventing unnecessary movement of the retained trim
- Supporting the original rear glass finishing arrangement
- Maintaining a neat, factory-style appearance
- Replacing damaged or missing trim retaining components
Although the clamping strip does not operate the rear window mechanism, it forms part of the surrounding trim assembly.
Why Does the Clamping Strip Fail?
Rear window trim retaining components can deteriorate through age, vibration, moisture and repeated maintenance.
Common causes of failure include:
- Damage during rear window removal or installation
- Distortion caused by incorrect fitting
- Corrosion or deterioration of retaining components
- Broken or damaged attachment points
- Wear from vibration and repeated rear glass operation
- Previous accident or bodywork repairs
- General age-related deterioration
A damaged clamping strip may no longer retain the surrounding trim correctly, resulting in loose or poorly aligned components.
When Should It Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended when the original rear window trim clamping strip becomes damaged, distorted, loose or missing.
Common signs include:
- Loose rear window trim
- Visible gaps or uneven trim alignment
- Damaged or bent retaining sections
- Missing or broken mounting points
- Trim movement during rear window operation
- Poorly fitted trim following glass replacement
- Damage discovered during Targa roof repairs
Replacement is also worthwhile when carrying out rear window refurbishment, Targa roof maintenance or bodywork restoration.
Checks & Diagnosis
Before replacing the clamping strip, inspect the surrounding rear window trim and glass assembly.
Check for:
- Damaged or distorted clamping sections
- Loose or missing retaining hardware
- Incorrect trim positioning
- Damage to adjacent mouldings
- Deteriorated rear window seals
- Signs of water entering around the rear glass
- Previous repairs affecting the trim fit
A loose clamping strip should not automatically be assumed to be the cause of a water leak. The rear window seals, drainage arrangements and surrounding roof components should also be inspected.
Installation Notes
The Porsche 997 Targa rear window and glass roof assembly contains specialised glazing, trim and operating components.
Before removing the original clamping strip, inspect the surrounding trim and determine the correct removal procedure.
Carefully remove the damaged component without placing unnecessary pressure on the rear glass or adjacent mouldings.
Inspect the mounting surfaces and associated retaining hardware before installing the replacement strip.
Fit the clamping strip in the correct position and ensure the surrounding trim is properly seated.
Following installation, check rear window operation, trim alignment and clearance around the glass.
Professional installation by a Porsche specialist or technician experienced with Targa roof systems is recommended.
