Front Suspension Wear and Replacement
On the Porsche 964, common failure points in the front suspension include the control arm bushings and ball joints. As these components wear, you may notice clunking over bumps, loose or vague steering, uneven tire wear, or steering wheel vibration. Because the front suspension system is highly interconnected, wear in one part often accelerates the deterioration of other components.
To address this, we’ve developed a complete wishbone control arm & ball joints kit designed to restore handling, performance, and safety. This kit includes new front control arms and ball joints, ensuring a comprehensive solution rather than piecemeal repairs.
Fits:
- Porsche 964 (911) C2 1989-93
- Porsche 964 (911) C4 1989-93
- Porsche 964 (911) TURBO 3.3L 1991-93

Why Control Arms Matter
Control arms serve as a critical link between the suspension and the subframe. Their hinged design allows the suspension to articulate as the vehicle absorbs bumps or navigates turns. On vehicles with independent suspension, like the 964, multiple arms and connection points contribute to better ride comfort and stability.
As bushings and joints within a control arm wear out, the suspension can begin to feel loose or unstable. While some designs allow individual components to be serviced, many control arms require complete replacement to restore proper function.
Symptoms of Control Arm Failure
Signs that your control arms may need replacement include:
- Excessive play where the arms connect to the subframe or knuckle
- Clunking or knocking noises from the suspension
- Uneven tire wear
- Difficulty achieving proper wheel alignment
- Steering wheel vibration at highway speeds
- Wandering or pulling sensation through the steering wheel

Ball joint lock pin is an suspension fastener designed to secure the front lower ball joint to the strut or wishbone assembly on classic Porsche models. It installs into the ball joint mount to secure the connection between suspension links and steering knuckles. It’s suitable for maintenance, rebuilds, or restoration of front suspension components and fits directly without modification.

Diagram ref no 20
The lock pin provides a secure fastening point that holds the front lower ball joint in place, ensuring the suspension components remain correctly aligned under load and motion. It helps transmit steering forces while keeping the joint assembly stable during driving.
Installed through the ball joint and suspension link interface, this pin maintains clamping and positional integrity, aiding the suspension’s ability to articulate smoothly while resisting unwanted movement. It works in conjunction with the control arm and steering knuckle to support safe, responsive handling.
Front suspension hardware like the ball joint lock pin can wear, corrode, or lose clamping strength over time, which may lead to play in the suspension, uneven tyre wear, and compromised steering feel. Replacing worn or damaged pins with OE Match parts helps maintain precise suspension geometry and consistent handling characteristics.
When to replace:
• Ball joint pin is corroded, bent, or worn
• Loose or sloppy front suspension feel
• During ball joint, control arm, or strut service
• Restoration of classic suspension systems
• After removal or disassembly of front suspension
