Synchro Brake Band 3rd / 4th / 5th gear
This OE Match synchro brake band is a replacement transmission synchroniser component used on Porsche 911 models fitted with the 915 gearbox. It is designed for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear synchroniser assembly and matches the original-style fit and function.
3 per gearbox. *please note: these are 1/2 pieces so order 2 pcs to make one complete brake band
Fits:
Porsche 911 1974 - 1986 (915 Gearbox)
Diagram ref no 8.
This brake band fits inside the 915 manual gearbox, within the synchroniser assembly for 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. It is an internal transmission component and is accessed during gearbox disassembly or synchroniser service.
The synchro brake band works as part of the gearbox synchroniser system. During gear changes, it helps control and equalise the speed of the gear and synchroniser hub before engagement. This allows the gear to engage more smoothly and helps reduce grinding, baulking, or difficult shifting.
Functions
• Supports smooth gear engagement in the 915 gearbox
• Helps synchronise gear speed during shifting
• Reduces gear clash, grinding, and shift resistance
• Works with the synchro ring, anchor block, energiser block, and operating sleeve
• Helps restore correct shift quality in worn gearbox assemblies
• Provides an OE Match replacement for the original brake band
• Suitable for gearbox rebuilds and synchroniser repairs
Why Replace This Part?
The synchro brake band is subject to wear every time the gearbox is shifted. Over time, it can become worn, distorted, cracked, or weakened, which may lead to poor synchroniser performance. A worn brake band can contribute to grinding gears, difficult engagement, or a notchy shift feel, especially in higher gears. Replacing it during gearbox service helps restore smoother gear changes and supports long-term transmission reliability.
When to Replace:
• The gearbox is grinding when selecting 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear
• Gear changes feel notchy, stiff, or difficult
• The transmission baulks or resists engagement
• The 915 gearbox is being rebuilt or inspected
• The synchroniser ring or operating sleeve is being replaced
• The brake band is worn, cracked, bent, or damaged
• There is excessive wear in the synchroniser assembly
• As preventative replacement during a full gearbox overhaul
