For the first time, the Porsche 911 lineup replaces the naturally aspirated flat-six engine with a 3.0ltr turbocharged version. While this shift may upset purists, the new 911s are faster, more efficient, and even more enjoyable to drive.
The new turbocharged six-cylinder engine has a smaller displacement but delivers more power and torque than any previous naturally aspirated 911 engine. Fixed-vane turbochargers enhance combustion, while the 991.2 Carrera S benefits from larger compressors, a unique exhaust, and tailored engine management systems.
The 991.2 Carrera S now produces 414 bhp at 6500 rpm, 20 bhp more than the previous 3.8ltr engine, and 368 ft-lbs of torque from just 1700 rpm, a 43 ft-lb increase. This results in a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds with the PDK transmission and Sport Chrono package, a quarter-mile time of 12.2 seconds, and a top speed of 190 mph for the Carrera S Cabriolet.
Beyond the engine, the new Carrera models offer four-wheel steering similar to that in the 911 Turbo and GT3, and a mode-selection switch on the steering wheel for models with the Sport Chrono package. This rotary switch includes Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual modes. With PDK, a Sport Response button preconditions the engine for 20 seconds of maximum acceleration, ideal for overtaking.
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is now standard, lowering the ride height by 10mm for improved stability and comfort. New shock absorbers also enhance precision and comfort.
Inside, the Carrera S Cabriolet features the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with voice control and multi-touch functionality via a 7.0-inch display. A smartphone tray in the center armrest offers charging and optimized reception. Apple CarPlay is available, but Google Earth and StreetView options will be delayed until late 2017 in some markets. The Porsche Connect app, providing remote control of vehicle functions and music streaming integration, will arrive in early 2018.
