The updated Porsche 997.2 GT3 made its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, hitting the European market in May and reaching the US in October. Sporting vents between the tail lights and a larger rear wing adorned with "3.8" lettering, signifying the engine displacement increase, this iteration boasted several enhancements. Engine modifications included forged pistons, lightweight valves, and hollow camshafts to reduce weight. The sole transmission option was a special 6-speed manual with shorter gear ratios for optimal power delivery to the rear wheels. Total downforce was doubled, and stability control was introduced for the first time to assist less experienced drivers. The new 3.8ltr flat-6 engine delivered 435 PS (320kW; 429bhp) at 7,600 rpm and 430Nm (317 lb⋅ft) at 6,250 rpm, with a redline of 8,500 rpm. When activated, the sport mode provided an additional 19.9Nm (14.7 lb⋅ft) of torque to the rear wheels.
Developed by Porsche's Motorsport Division in Weissach, the GT3 and GT3 RS hit the market in September 2009. The cars boasted titanium double exhaust pipes, carbon fiber rear spoiler lips, rear lid ram air scoops, front above bumper air outlets, and mirrors, along with aluminum 19-inch forged alloy wheels with central locking nuts. The GT3 came equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires (235/35-19 front, 305/30-19 rear). Optional features in the UK included a roll cage and fire extinguisher.
The GT3 RS, introduced in 2010, was a high-performance version of the GT3, featuring higher engine output, reduced weight, and shorter transmission ratios. The engine produced 450PS (331kW; 444bhp) at 7,900 rpm and 430Nm (317 lb⋅ft) at 6,750 rpm, with a redline of 8,500 rpm. Sporting a wider front and rear track, a large fixed carbon fiber rear wing, standard roll cage, and decals, the RS boasted dynamic engine mounts, PASM suspension, and titanium connecting rods. Optional equipment included a lighter lithium-ion battery.
