The turbocharger uses energy from the engine's exhaust gases to drive a turbine connected to a compressor. The compressor forces a greater volume of air into the engine, allowing the engine-management system to produce increased power and torque while maintaining the intended performance characteristics.
A turbocharger operates at extremely high rotational speeds and temperatures and depends on correct lubrication, cooling, intake airflow and exhaust flow. Bearing wear, oil contamination, damaged compressor or turbine components, actuator problems and oil-supply faults can eventually cause turbocharger performance to deteriorate or fail completely.
What This Product Does:
The turbocharger increases the amount of air supplied to the engine.
Exhaust gases leaving the engine spin the turbocharger's turbine wheel. This turbine is connected by a shaft to a compressor wheel on the intake side.
As the compressor rotates, it compresses the incoming air before it reaches the engine.
This process helps:
- Increase the quantity of air available for combustion
- Generate boost pressure
- Increase engine power and torque
- Improve engine performance under load
- Support the intended factory engine output
- Allow efficient use of exhaust-gas energy
The turbocharger works together with the intake, exhaust, lubrication, cooling and engine-management systems.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Common symptoms of turbocharger deterioration can include:
- Loss of engine power
- Reduced boost pressure
- Slow or inconsistent boost response
- Poor acceleration
- Engine-management warning light
- Underboost or overboost fault codes
