Manufactured to OE specifications, this replacement dog teeth ring delivers precise machining, excellent durability and factory-correct fitment. Whether you're rebuilding a Porsche 930 gearbox, addressing synchroniser wear or carrying out a full transmission restoration, replacing worn dog teeth is essential for achieving smooth gear changes and long-term gearbox reliability.
What Do 2nd Gear Dog Teeth Do?
The dog teeth ring is mounted directly to the gear and forms an essential part of the Porsche 930 synchroniser system. During a gear change, the synchroniser assembly matches the rotational speed of the selected gear before the operating sleeve engages the dog teeth to lock the gear to the shaft.
The dog teeth perform several vital functions:
- Enable smooth engagement of 2nd gear.
- Provide the engagement surface for the operating sleeve.
- Help synchronise gear speeds during shifting.
- Reduce gear clash and transmission wear.
- Maintain precise gear selection.
- Support reliable gearbox operation under load.
In the high-torque Porsche 930 transmission, properly functioning dog teeth are critical for maintaining shift quality and preventing excessive wear to other synchroniser components.
Why Do 2nd Gear Dog Teeth Fail?
Dog teeth are subjected to repeated impact loads during every gear change. Over time, wear gradually alters the shape of the engagement teeth, reducing their effectiveness and causing shifting issues.
Common causes of failure include:
- High mileage transmission wear.
- Aggressive shifting and rapid gear changes.
- Worn synchroniser rings.
- Poor gearbox lubrication.
- Contaminated transmission oil.
- Excessive drivetrain loading.
- Gear grinding during engagement.
- Age-related wear and fatigue.
Second gear is one of the most frequently used gears during normal driving, making its synchroniser and dog teeth assembly particularly vulnerable to long-term wear.
When Should 2nd Gear Dog Teeth Be Replaced?
The dog teeth ring should always be inspected whenever the
gearbox is dismantled. Replacement is recommended if you notice:
- Difficulty engaging 2nd gear.
- Crunching or grinding during shifts.
- Rounded or hooked engagement teeth.
- Gear engagement becoming increasingly notchy.
- Visible wear, chipping or damage.
- Excessive synchroniser wear.
- Transmission rebuild requirements.
Most Porsche gearbox specialists recommend replacing worn dog teeth during transmission overhauls to restore smooth shifting and protect other synchroniser components from premature wear.

Manufactured to OE specifications, this replacement dog teeth ring provides accurate machining, correct tooth geometry and exceptional durability for transmission rebuilds, restorations and performance maintenance. Whether you're rebuilding a worn gearbox or restoring a classic Porsche 930 to factory standards, replacing worn dog teeth is essential for preserving smooth gear selection and transmission longevity.
What Do 3rd / 4th Gear Dog Teeth Do?
The dog teeth ring forms an integral part of the Porsche 930 synchroniser assembly. Mounted to the gear, it provides the engagement interface between the gear and the synchroniser operating sleeve.
During a gear change, the synchroniser system matches rotational speeds between components before the operating sleeve engages the dog teeth, locking the selected gear to the shaft and transmitting engine power through the transmission.
The dog teeth help:
- Enable smooth engagement of 3rd and 4th gears.
- Provide positive gear locking during operation.
- Reduce gear clash during shifting.
- Improve gear change precision.
- Support synchroniser operation.
- Maintain reliable gearbox performance under load.
Properly functioning dog teeth are essential for preserving the smooth shift quality and driving enjoyment of the Porsche 930 transmission.
Why Do 3rd / 4th Gear Dog Teeth Fail?
Over time, repeated gear changes gradually wear the engagement surfaces of the dog teeth. As wear increases, gear engagement quality deteriorates and additional stress is placed on the synchroniser assembly.
Common causes of failure include:
- High mileage wear.
- Aggressive driving and fast shifting.
- Worn synchroniser rings.
- Gear grinding during engagement.
- Contaminated gearbox oil.
- Inadequate transmission maintenance.
- Excessive drivetrain loads from turbocharged performance.
- Age-related metal fatigue.
Third and fourth gears often see frequent use during normal road driving and higher-speed operation, making their synchroniser components susceptible to long-term wear.
When Should 3rd / 4th Gear Dog Teeth Be Replaced?
Dog teeth should be inspected whenever the gearbox is
dismantled or rebuilt. Replacement is recommended if you experience:
- Difficulty engaging 3rd or 4th gear.
- Gear crunching or grinding during shifts.
- Rounded, hooked or worn engagement teeth.
- Excessive synchroniser wear.
- Poor shift quality.
- Visible damage or chipping.
- Transmission rebuild requirements.
Most Porsche transmission specialists replace worn dog teeth alongside synchroniser rings, guide hubs and operating sleeves during gearbox overhauls to ensure optimal shifting performance.

Fits:
Porsche 911 Turbo 1975 - 1988 (4 speed gearbox)
Diagram ref no: 41
What This Product Does
The synchro ring works within the gearbox synchroniser assembly to bring rotating components towards matching speeds before the selected gear engages. This product is the ring for first or second gear, not a brake band or dog-tooth component.
Functions
- Provides friction for synchronising gear speeds during selection.
- Supports engagement of first or second gear within the specified transmission.
Technical Details
- Brand: Genuine Porsche.
- Gear application: 1st/2nd gear.
- Transmission application: four-speed manual gearbox.
- Existing product reference: 93030230100.
Symptoms of Fault
- Crunching or grinding while selecting first or second gear.
- Resistance to engagement or a need to pause before completing a shift.
- Gear clash during downshifts.
These symptoms do not confirm ring wear on their own. Clutch operation, linkage condition and gearbox oil can also affect selection.
Why Replacement Matters
A worn friction surface can prevent the synchroniser assembly from matching speeds effectively. Renewing a ring after confirmed wear addresses that component during gearbox repair. Inspect the associated engagement teeth, brake bands and selector components rather than assuming the ring is the only worn part.
FAQs
Will fresh gearbox oil repair a worn ring?
No. Correctly specified oil may influence shift feel, but it cannot restore a worn friction surface.
Does double-declutching fix the problem?
It may ease the symptoms, but it does not renew damaged synchroniser components.
Which reference should I check?
