The OE Match Fuel Injection Pump Drive Gear is a replacement toothed drive gear fitted directly to the mechanical fuel injection pump used on selected classic Porsche 911 models.
Fits:For vehicles with Mechanical Fuel Injection
- Porsche 911 E/S 1969-71
- Porsche 911 T-E/E/S Carrera 2.7 1972-73
- Porsche 911/98 1974-77
This gear forms a critical part of the Porsche mechanical fuel injection, or MFI, drive system.
It works together with the toothed injection-pump drive belt and the corresponding drive gear mounted on the left-hand camshaft. As the engine rotates, the camshaft-mounted gear drives the toothed belt, which in turn rotates this gear on the MFI pump.
This mechanical connection keeps the injection pump synchronised with engine speed and position so that fuel can be metered and delivered at the correct point in the engine cycle.
Wear, damaged teeth, incorrect fitment or looseness in the drive gear can interfere with this synchronisation and may contribute to poor engine running, incorrect injection timing, belt wear or complete loss of injection-pump drive.
Replacing a worn or damaged gear helps restore reliable MFI pump drive and preserves the precise mechanical relationship between the engine and injection pump.
What This Product Does:
The MFI Pump Drive Gear transfers rotational drive from the engine to the mechanical fuel injection pump.
Its main functions are to:
- Drive the mechanical fuel injection pump.
- Engage with the toothed MFI drive belt.
- Maintain correct injection-pump timing.
- Keep the pump synchronised with engine rotation.
- Support accurate mechanical fuel metering.
- Maintain stable engine performance.
- Provide a correctly profiled drive surface for the MFI belt.
- Replace a worn, damaged or incorrectly fitted original gear.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Possible signs include:
- Visible tooth wear.
- Chipped teeth.
- Rounded tooth profiles.
- Cracked or damaged gear.
- Excessive gear movement.
- Gear running out of true.
- MFI belt tracking incorrectly.
- Accelerated belt wear.
- Belt dust around the drive area.
- Repeated injection-pump timing problems.
- Difficult starting.
- Rough running.
- Misfiring.
- Poor throttle response.
- Reduced engine performance.
- MFI pump no longer being driven correctly.
Because many of these running symptoms can also be caused by MFI pump calibration, ignition or fuel-system faults, the complete system should be diagnosed before replacement.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a worn or damaged Fuel Injection Pump Drive Gear helps restore:
- Reliable MFI pump drive.
- Correct belt engagement.
- Stable mechanical injection timing.
- Consistent fuel delivery.
- Smooth engine operation.
- Correct throttle response.
- Reliable belt tracking.
- Long-term MFI system dependability.

Diagram ref no 22.
This sprocket (gear) is part of the timing / camshaft drive system, engaging with the timing chain (or drive chain) to convert crankshaft rotational motion into synchronized camshaft motion. It ensures that the camshafts open and close valves at the correct moments relative to piston position, essential for proper combustion, engine efficiency, and emissions. Accurate tooth profile, hardness, and alignment are crucial—improperly manufactured or worn sprockets can lead to timing drift, noise, chain jump, or catastrophic engine damage.
Original stock / old timing gears can wear, fatigue, or lose tooth integrity over time — especially under heat cycles and chain load. A worn or mismatched sprocket may cause timing chain noise (ticking, rattle), timing drift, or—worst case—chain jump or engine damage. An new replacement restores correct tooth geometry, material hardness, and precision alignment, ensuring the timing system operates smoothly and reliably.
