This OE Match grommet is used in several factory
applications, including:
- Brake master cylinder feed and return pipes.
- Engine lid release cable (1974–1977).
- Fuel flap release cable (1987–1989 models fitted with the plastic fuel expansion bowl).
Although small, this rubber grommet plays an important role in protecting components from wear, vibration and damage while helping maintain factory-quality fitment.
What Does the Rubber Grommet Do?
The rubber grommet provides a protective and cushioned interface between the vehicle body and cables or pipework.
Depending on its installation location, it performs several
important functions:
- Supports brake master cylinder feed and return pipes.
- Protects hydraulic pipes from chafing against metal panels.
- Supports the engine lid release cable.
- Guides and protects the fuel flap release cable.
- Prevents vibration and rattles.
- Eliminates metal-to-metal contact.
- Helps reduce wear caused by continual movement.
By securely locating these components, the grommet contributes to long-term reliability throughout the vehicle.
Why Do Rubber Grommets Fail?
Rubber components naturally age and deteriorate over time
through constant exposure to heat, vibration and environmental conditions.
Common causes of failure include:
- Age-related hardening.
- Cracking and splitting.
- Compression causing loss of elasticity.
- Oil, grease or brake fluid contamination.
- UV and ozone exposure.
- General wear after years of service.
Once the rubber loses its flexibility, it can no longer properly support or protect the cables and pipework, increasing the risk of wear and vibration.
When Should the Rubber Grommet Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended whenever the surrounding
components are removed or serviced, or if you notice:
Cracked
or perished rubber.
- Loose cables or pipework.
- Flattened or compressed grommets.
- Signs of cable or pipe chafing.
- Missing or damaged grommets.
- During restoration or preventative maintenance.
Replacing worn rubber grommets is an inexpensive way to restore factory fitment while protecting valuable cables and hydraulic components from premature wear.
