The flexible drive cable is a vital component within the electric roof mechanism. Over time, repeated operation, wear and contamination can cause the original cable to wear, bind or fail, resulting in slow roof movement, uneven operation or complete loss of drive. Replacing a worn cable helps restore reliable roof operation while preventing unnecessary strain on the roof motor and transmission assemblies.
Whether you're repairing a faulty roof mechanism or carrying out preventative maintenance, this OE Match replacement provides factory-quality fitment and dependable long-term performance.
What Does the Cabriolet Hood Drive Cable Do?
The pliable drive cable transfers rotational force from the roof drive motor to the convertible roof transmission.
Its primary functions include:
- Transmits drive from the roof motor.
- Synchronises roof movement on both sides.
- Enables smooth opening and closing.
- Supports consistent roof operation.
- Maintains correct roof timing.
- Reduces stress on the roof mechanism.
- Ensures reliable electric hood operation.
A correctly functioning drive cable is essential for the safe and smooth operation of the convertible roof system.
Why Replace the Cabriolet Hood Drive Cable?
Convertible roof drive cables are subject to continual movement and mechanical loading throughout their service life.
Common reasons for replacement include:
- Worn internal cable.
- Cable breakage.
- Frayed or damaged cable ends.
- Corrosion.
- Binding within the guide tube.
- Uneven roof movement.
- Roof mechanism repair.
- Preventative maintenance during roof refurbishment.
Replacing worn drive cables helps restore smooth operation and reduces the risk of further damage to the roof mechanism.
Symptoms of a Worn or Failed Drive Cable
Common warning signs include:
- Roof stops moving during operation.
- One side of the roof moves faster than the other.
- Roof becomes misaligned.
- Clicking or grinding noises from the roof mechanism.
- Slow or jerky roof movement.
- Roof motor operates without moving the hood.
- Roof fails to open or close completely.
- Visible wear or damage to the drive cable.
Addressing these symptoms promptly can help prevent more costly repairs to the roof transmission or motor.
Benefits
- Restores smooth convertible roof operation.
- Ensures synchronised movement of the roof mechanism.
- Helps protect the roof motor and transmissions.
- Reduces the risk of roof misalignment.
- Durable construction for long service life.
- Factory-quality fitment.

Installation Recommendations
For the best results, inspect the complete convertible roof
system during installation, including:
- Roof drive motor.
- Roof transmission gearboxes.
- Opposite-side drive cable.
- Roof linkages.
- Pivot points.
- Guide tubes.
- Convertible roof microswitches.
- Roof control module operation.
Where one drive cable has failed due to wear, it is advisable to inspect—or replace—the opposite cable to maintain balanced operation and minimise future repairs.
