Over time, the joint can develop play, the boot can split, or the threaded adjustment section can seize. A worn track rod can cause vague steering, knocking, uneven tyre wear or poor wheel alignment.
Common Symptoms of a Worn Track Rod
• Knocking or clunking from the front suspension / steering area
• Play in the steering wheel
• Loose or vague steering feel
• Uneven front tyre wear
• Vehicle pulling to one side
• Steering vibration
• Split or damaged ball joint dust boot
• Failed MOT / roadworthiness inspection due to steering joint play
• Toe alignment cannot be adjusted correctly.
When to Replace This Part
• If the ball joint has play or looseness
• If the dust boot is split or leaking grease
• If the track rod is bent, seized or damaged
• During front suspension or steering overhaul
• When replacing steering rack components
• If uneven tyre wear is caused by steering joint wear
• If the vehicle fails inspection due to track rod play
Where It Fits on the Car
This track rod fits in the front steering system, connecting the steering rack / linkage to the front wheel hub carrier area.
It fits left or right side, so the same part can be used on either side where specified.
