The Genuine Porsche Vacuum Unit is a replacement air-intake vacuum actuator used within the intake distributor system on selected early Porsche Boxster 987 models.
Fits:
- Porsche Boxster 987 2.7L 2005-08/08
- Porsche Boxster 987 S 3.2/3.4L 2005-08/08
Diagram Ref No 9
Mounted to the intake distributor assembly, the unit uses engine vacuum to operate an internal intake-air control mechanism. By moving the associated flap or linkage when commanded, the actuator helps the intake system alter airflow characteristics according to engine speed, throttle position and operating load.
Porsche uses variable intake geometry to improve the way the naturally aspirated flat-six engine breathes across different operating conditions. Correct vacuum-actuator operation helps the intake distributor change configuration when required, supporting smooth torque delivery, throttle response and efficient cylinder filling.
The actuator contains a diaphragm that converts vacuum pressure into mechanical movement. With age, the diaphragm can leak, the housing can crack, the actuator rod can stick or associated vacuum connections can deteriorate.
Replacing a faulty vacuum unit helps restore correct intake-flap operation and ensures the engine-management system can control the intake system as intended.
What This Product Does:
The vacuum unit converts vacuum pressure into mechanical movement.
It is designed to:
- Operate the intake distributor control mechanism.
- Move the associated intake flap or linkage.
- Help alter intake airflow characteristics.
- Support correct variable intake operation.
- Help optimise torque across different engine speeds.
- Support smooth throttle response.
- Maintain correct intake-system operation.
- Respond to vacuum control commands from the engine-management system.
- Replace a leaking, seized or damaged original actuator.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Possible symptoms include:
- Reduced low- or mid-range torque.
- Flat spots during acceleration.
- Poorer throttle response.
- Engine feeling less responsive at certain RPM.
- Intake system not changing operating mode correctly.
- Check Engine Light.
- Intake-related diagnostic fault codes.
- Vacuum leak.
- Hissing noise from the intake area.
- Rough or inconsistent idle in some cases.
- Actuator rod failing to move.
- Intake flap remaining stuck in one position.
- Engine performance changing noticeably across the rev range.
- Increased emissions due to incorrect intake control.
- Vacuum actuator failing a hand-vacuum test.
Why Replacement Matters:
Replacing a faulty vacuum unit helps restore:
- Correct intake-flap movement.
- Proper intake-system switching.
- Predictable throttle response.
- More consistent torque delivery.
- Correct intake airflow control.
- Reliable vacuum operation.
- Proper engine-management functionality.
Although the engine may continue running with a failed actuator, performance and drivability may be compromised.
