The steering rack boot is a low-cost part that plays a critical protective role. Over time, the original boot can crack, tear, or stiffen due to age, heat, and exposure to road conditions. Once compromised, contaminants like water, dirt, and salt can enter the rack housing, accelerating corrosion, wearing internal gears and bearings, and potentially causing rack failure or steering problems. Replacing boot ensures the rack remains protected, lubricated, and functions smoothly - helping avoid costly steering repairs or unsafe handling issues.
Consider replacing the boot if any of the following occur:
• The rubber bellows shows visible cracks, tears, splits or hardening.
• You notice grease leaking around the rack area - a sign the boot may have ruptured.

We strongly recommend replacing the power steering pump at the same time as the steering rack. Swarf (metal particles) in the power steering system can circulate and cause damage to both components. If you choose to replace only the steering rack and, upon return of your exchange unit, we discover that the rack bar is scored or contaminated with swarf, this indicates that debris is present in the system. In such cases, we advise replacing the pump as well.
Please note: if we have advised that there is swarf in the system and you choose not to replace both components, any future warranty claims related to this issue will not be valid.

What This Product Does:
- Transmit Steering Input - When you turn the steering wheel, the steering rack moves. The track rod carries that motion to the wheel knuckle, causing the wheels to turn.
- Maintain Alignment & Geometry - It helps maintain front-end alignment (toe settings) so tires wear evenly and steering remains precise.
- Compensate for Suspension Movement - As the suspension moves up/down (bumps, cornering), the track rod must maintain its connection and angle without binding or excessive play.
- Absorb Minor Deflection - It must be stiff, but slightly forgiving to absorb small impacts or vibrations — not rigid.
- Excess play / looseness in steering — the steering wheel feels “loose” or delayed.
- Knock / clunk noises from front end during bumps or over uneven road surfaces.
- Uneven or accelerated tire wear, especially inner or outer edges.
- Steering pulling — the car tends to drift or pull to one side.
- Variable steering feel — sometimes stiff, sometimes loose — depending on direction or motion.
- Excessive vibration or shimmy in the front wheels.
- Safety & Control - A loose or failing track rod compromises steering precision. That can reduce driver control, especially at higher speeds — a serious safety hazard.
- Prevents Further Damage - A worn track rod transmits irregular forces to the steering rack, knuckles, and wheel bearings, accelerating wear on those components.
- Restores Alignment Integrity - A good track rod lets alignment settings (toe, camber) hold correctly; a bad one causes alignment to drift.
