What This Product Does:
- The brake pad wear sensor is an electronic (or electrical) component mounted in the brake pad or on the pad carrier that monitors how much friction material remains on the brake pads. When the pad material wears down to a predefined depth, the sensor triggers a warning light (or message) on the instrument cluster, alerting the driver that the brake pads need replacement.
- It helps prevent brake pad material becoming too thin, which could lead to metal-to-rotor contact, rotor damage, decreased braking performance, excessive noise, or even failure of the brake system under heavy load.
- On the 911 992 (and similar models), because performance and safety are critical, ensuring the wear sensor is functioning correctly helps maintain expected braking performance, safe maintenance intervals, and protects against unexpected pad failure.
Signs & When To Replace:
- The brake pad warning light or a message displays on your dash indicating “Brake pad wear” or similar — it could signify that the sensor is triggered or faulting.
- You have replaced the brake pads and did not install a new sensor, or the old sensor was damaged or not re-installed — it’s best practice to replace the sensor whenever the pads are changed.
- The wiring to the sensor is damaged, frayed, broken, or the connector is corroded or loose. A broken sensor cable will not warn you of low pad material.
- You are replacing the brake pads/discs or servicing the front brakes — installing a fresh sensor ensures correct maintenance.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Brake safety and performance: The sensor is a key part of the wear-monitoring system—without it you may continue driving after the pads are too thin, risking rotor damage or reduced stopping power.
- Prevents unintended damage: If pads are worn too far without notice, metal backing might contact the rotor, causing rotor scoring, vibration or costly damage. The wear sensor helps prevent that scenario.
